Science Intent
At Legsby, we want learners to:
Engage fully in an enriching science curriculum,
Understand the relevance of science to our everyday lives,
Use questioning to explore their observations,
Realise that everyone can contribute to a scientific enquiry and,
Have the confidence to question their hypotheses.
Implementation
At Legsby, we follow a science curriculum developed with the experts at Cornerstones Education. Coverage of the National Curriculum is embedded in the progression maps across Key Stages and contains specific development of questioning skills, as well as deep understanding of scientific knowledge. Our learners' journey will begin with the "Understanding of the world" area of the EYFS curriculum.
Children's books will show opportunities to predict, explain and question scientific principles whilst applying these to historical and contemporary events. They will also look at the roles of significant individuals who have affected and continue to affect our lives. Our learners will build on this knowledge to identify the impact science has on society from the development of vaccines to our understanding of the universe as well as the solutions it can offer with regard to climate change and the protection of the environment.
Whilst knowledge and understanding will be evidenced in books, children will be encouraged to think around the subject and apply their knowledge acriss all areas of the curriculum.
Impact on our learners
Children will have an understanding of the Scientific Method enabling them to distinguish between opinion and scientific fact.
Our learners will have the confidence to question findings.
Our learners will be inquisitive observers who understand how to find explanations for what they see.
They will realise that Science isn't an isolated subject, it pervades all aspects of life and learning.
Legsby students will be confident, lifelong scientists with a good understanding of the world around them.
