History Intent
At Legsby we recognise the importance of learning about our past and using that knowledge to help shape our futures. Through our history curriculum we want our learners to be:
- Aware of historical events that have led us to where we are today
- Inspired to stride for change and continuity
- Confident with practical and experiential lessons
At Legsby Primary, it is our intention to encourage and instil a love of History throughout our school. We do this by aiming to provide a history curriculum that embeds the necessary subject knowledge, skills and understanding outlined in the National Curriculum.
Implementation
It is our aim to provide the children at Legsby with a programme of study that is both interesting and varied in order to entice the children. We achieve this through the use of Cornerstones which details different topics to be studied throughout the academic year. These topics are specifically designed for our rural school and reflect our local environment, whilst meeting the needs of all backgrounds, cultures and abilities found at Legsby.
Throughout our study of History, we try and link our learning to other subject areas to extend and enrich our learning further. From Reception right up to year 6, the children will be learning about a wide variety of historical events, exploring historical timelines and famous historical figures.
Due to the nature and structure of our school, our curriculum is based off a two-year cycle (Rainbow and Lightning) and three-year cycle (Clouds) to ensure we provide the children a broad and balanced curriculum.
Impact on our Learners
As a result of our history curriculum:
- The children will be able to talk about their skills and knowledge they have obtained
- Children will have a natural desire and thirst for finding out ‘more’
- Use their knowledge and skills to influence their future decisions as they progress through the next stages of their lives
- Our children will be naturally curious about the past and future workings of our everchanging world
