English Statement

At Legsby Primary School, all children are encouraged and challenged to excel in English. Our curriculum is built around the Literacy Tree scheme, providing a carefully sequenced and progressive approach to reading and writing. Each term is centred on high quality core texts, immersing pupils in rich vocabulary, meaningful themes and engaging narratives.

This text-led approach supports effective teaching within our mixed-age classes. Year group objectives are clearly mapped to ensure appropriate challenge, progression and high expectation for all learners. Reading and writing are closely linked, enabling children to explore language, grammar and text structure before applying these skills in purposeful writing outcomes.

Teachers carefully model new learning and provide structured opportunities for practice before pupils work independently. Key skills are revisited over time to build secure foundations and deepen understanding. Lessons are planned to meet the needs of all learners with targeted intervention used when necessary to support progress.

Opportunities for discussion and reflection are embedded throughout, strengthening comprehension and encouraging children to articulate their ideas clearly and confidently. Weekly spelling assessments and regular handwriting lessons further support accuracy and presentation.

Through our English curriculum, we aim to develop confident readers, articulate speakers and creative writers with a genuine love of literature and language.

Reading and Writing Progression

Our Intent

At Legsby Primary School, we believe in the power of the written word. We want every child to develop a love of reading and writing and to understand how language can be used to express ideas, share viewpoints and inspire others.

Our English curriculum, delivered through the Literacy Tree scheme, is designed to immerse pupils in high-quality texts that promote curiosity, creativity and critical thinking. We aim to equip children with the skills, confidence and vocabulary needed to communicate effectively, recognising that their words have value and the potential to make a difference.

Through carefully sequenced learning, we ensure that pupils develop secure foundations in reading, writing, grammar and spoken language, enabling them to become articulate, thoughtful and independent communicators.

Our Implementation

Our curriculum places high quality texts at the heart of learning. Each unit is carefully sequenced to ensure clear progression across year groups, including within our mixed-age classes. Year group objectives are clearly mapped to provide appropriate challenge and support for all learners.

Lessons move from immersion in a text to analysis and skill development before pupils apply their learning in purposeful and independent writing outcomes. Vocabulary, grammar and text structures are explicitly taught and revisited to secure understanding over time.

Reading is prioritised across the school. Whole-class reading sessions develop fluency, comprehension and critical thinking, while speaking and listening opportunities are embedded to enable pupils to articulate ideas and justify opinions confidently. Ongoing formative assessment informs planning and ensures timely intervention and challenge where needed.

Our Impact

As a result of our structured, text-led approach, pupils become confident, fluent readers and imaginative, purposeful writers. They demonstrate secure knowledge of grammar and punctuation, use an incredibly rich vocabulary and adapt their writing for different audiences and purposes.

Children discuss texts thoughtfully, make inferences using evidence and take pride in the presentation and content of their work. By the time they leave Legsby Primary School, they are equipped with the literacy skills, confidence and love of reading for the next stage of their education and beyond.
