Computing Intent
A high quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and understand the changing technological world in which they live in.
It is our intention at Legsby Primary School to enable children to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information. We also focus on developing the skills necessary for children to become digitally literate.
With technology playing such a significant role in society today, we believe ‘Computational thinking’ is a skill children need to be taught if they are to be able to participate effectively and safely in this digital world. This equips them to use creativity to understand and change the world. Computing has deep links with mathematics, science, and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. At Legsby Primary School, pupils are introduced to a wide range of technology, from iPads, Chromebooks and laptops to systems which allow them to practise and apply fundamental principles and concepts of computer science. This ensures they become digitally literate so that they are able to express themselves and develop their ideas through information and computer technology at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.
We teach a curriculum that enables children to become effective users of technology who can:
- Understand and apply the essential principles and concepts of Computing, including logic, algorithms and data representation.
- Analyse problems in computational terms and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems.
- Evaluate and apply information technology analytically to solve problems.
- Communicate ideas well by utilising appliances and devices throughout all areas of the curriculum.
- Use IT safely, making safe and considered choices
Implementation
Legsby Primary School have adopted Purple Mash to teach the Computing Curriculum. This scheme of work provides a variety of task designs providing scaffolding for children’s learning.
Our curriculum has been devised with the building of core knowledge, key vocabulary and essential skills in mind taught through discrete lessons each week. Each year group progressively investigates the core four concepts of: computing systems and networks, media creation, programming and handling data and information. Each stage clarifies and cements previous knowledge whilst building up new concepts, knowledge and skills.
Impact
By building on their knowledge of computer science and how digital systems work, children are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. Our computing curriculum also ensures that children become digitally literate – able to safely use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.
